The first concert that I booked ahead for as opposed to just wandering into a venue almost on spec. A tremendous gig. Miles Davis trumpet, Sonny Stitt tenor sax, Wynton Kelly piano, Paul Chambers double bass, Jimmy Cobb drums. This band came between the quintet with John Coltrane and the later one with Wayne Shorter et al. In fact it may have been together just for this tour. They played Freddie Freeloader, On Green Dolphin Street, ‘Round Midnight, Walkin’ and All Blues. A fantastic occasion, seeing these heroes live, admiring the facility of their playing, the seriousness of their approach yet the nonchalance of their demeanour on stage. Reviewed by Benny Green in the Observer, 2 October 1960. They were preceded by The Jazz Five. a short-lived British band, consisting of Vic Ash clarinet/tenor sax, Harry Klein baritone sax, Brian Dee piano, Malcolm Cecil double bass, Bill Eyden drums.
