The programme was opened by the quality post-bop quintet led by Don Rendell and Ian Carr. They were Carr trumpet, Rendell tenor sax/soprano sax/flute, Michael Garrick piano, Dave Green double bs, Trevor Tomkins drums. Carr and Garrick were the composers. The headline group, unusually, had a baritone instead of the usual alto of Paul Desmond, played by none other than Gerry Mulligan. So we had Mulligan: baritone sax, Brubeck piano, Jack Six double bs, Alan Dawson drums. The expected unusual rhythms. The concert was reviewed by Michael James in Jazz Monthly 166, December 1968.
