London Jazz Festival : Ornette Coleman Quartet, Royal Festival Hall, London (GB) - Nov 20, 2011

The quartet we’ve become used to: Coleman, McDowell, Falanga, Denardo Coleman. They played the way we have become accustomed to, ie superbly. Great soaring astringent saxophone solos, terrific melodies, wondrous bass-playing on upright and electric bass, propulsive drumming, musicians working together at optimum level and, at the same time, being creative, no going through the motions. Back catalogue including Round Trip, Lonely Woman and Latin Genetics. Reviewed by Simon Adams in Jazz Journal and Tim Cumming in The Independent of 23 November 2011. This was the fifth and last time I saw Ornette, the first time being 30 years before. Perhaps the greatest I ever have seen.
