This great band played stuff from their long history from the 1920s to the present day. It was a tremendous experience hearing the sonorities of different instrumental combinations, the differences in tone and attack of the same instruments played by different musicians, the Ellingtonian arrangements, the soloing by famous names and the overall sound of a jazz orchestra so different from the well-drilled automatons that often masqueraded as jazz big bands. The players were: Cat Anderson, Herbie Jones, Rolf Ericson, Cootie Williams, trumpets, Lawrence Brown, Buster Cooper, Chuck Connors, trombones, Johnny Hodges alto/soprano sax, Russell Procope alto sax/clarinet, Paul Gonsalves tenor sax, Jimmy Hamilton tenor sax/clarinet, Harry Carney baritone sax/bass clarinet, Duke Ellington piano, Ernie Shepard double bass, Sam Woodyard drums.
